More and more controversy is hitting the media about using what has become know as a shock collar. The Myths and Truths are revealed.
Myth - My dog will get burned if the stimulation gets turned up too high. This is false as the stimulation received is only a static shock and will not cause burns on your dogs neck.
Truth - If you put the collar on too tight and leave it on for an extended period of time you will get pressure rub burns because the metal prongs are continually rubbing on your dog because they are tightly pressing against the skin. Everyone should remove and collar when not training.
Myth - We are being cruel to our dogs when we use the shock collar. False because we are training at a low level of stimulation and that stimulation is actually very gentle on your dog and much better than using a choke collar that can damage the dog's neck.
Truth - You need to get professional advice before using a shock collar. This is true because many people will automatically think their dog understands a situation and start pressing buttons when in fact the dog is confused and does not understand why he is being corrected.
The best thing you can do for your dog if wanting to utilize a shock collar is get a professional training lesson. Of course, it is not hard to understand how to use it because you turn it on and press a button but do you understand the level and how and why to start training your dog with this?
The truth is that the shock collar is the most humane training method used today. It does not cause trauma to the neck and trachea of the dog. It does not cause the handler arm and shoulder problems from pulling on the leash or being pulled by the leash.
The collars must be used in the way they were intended. Of course, we need to treat and respect our dogs the way we would like to be treated and being fair consistent and loving in all our work will create a great bond. The level in which you train with a shock collar must be a low level which is like tapping him on the shoulder to say hey you did not do what I just asked. No pain needs to be involved, just getting the dog's focus and attention.
